What Exactly is The Purpose of Waist Beads?

  Traditionally a West African adornment, waist beads are strings of glass, seed, wooden, and stone beads, worn for many purposes. Whether symbol of beauty, femininity, or well-being, a tool for manifestation, a weight loss/gain tracker, or merely an accessory to bring personality to an outfit, the purpose they serve is dependent on the intentions of the wearer. 

Waist Beads in the Traditional 

  In the traditional style, historically seen in Nigerian, Ghanaian, Senegalese (and other) cultures, waist beads are often a rite of passage. Given to young women around the age of puberty, to signify a coming of age, then replaced as she outgrows them. The use of the beads vary from expressing femininity, correcting posture, and a sign of beauty to protection, warding off evil, and signifying social standing.

Waist Beads for Manifestation

  For those that consider the colors of their waist beads to be symbolic, they can be used to both reflect aspects of their lives or to aid in manifesting their desires. Colors are known to signify specific desires, such as white reflecting peace, beginnings, cleansing of the mind and body, and clarity or orange for ambition and success. Though manifestation generally can occur intentionally and unintentionally, for those that don’t take interest in manifesting for the future, they can be a symbol reflecting life changes and new eras. Wearing a pink set could mean manifesting love and healing, or it may mirror the love already in your lie, self-love, or femininity. 

Contemporary Waist Beads

   Contemporary waist beads often have a layered function, merging traditional uses with modern self-care practices. To create more awareness about one’s body, in one practice they are worn as a reminder to correct posture, as how the beads will sit and fall can be altered by breathing patterns and how you sit. Similarly, waist beads are used for weight tracking with much of the same logic. As they don’t stretch (though ours are adjustable via extension chain), they fit higher and tighter on the waist when weight is gained, then lower and looser, closer to the hips, if it is lost. That being said, not every set is worn with a change or improvement in mind—not only for self-care, but also for self-love, they act as a symbol of body positivity to celebrate one’s curves. For black women across the diaspora, a set of waist beads can mean reclamation of lost heritage, culture, and ancestral roots.
